Telenor makes it cheaper and more secure to surf abroad

(Fornebu, 27 May 2015) Six out of ten Norwegians keep a watchful eye on their mobile bills when they are abroad. Now Telenor is making it easier to stay in control of your data costs while on holiday. At the same time, the cost of surfing in the EU and USA is going down.

In a survey conducted by InFact on behalf of Telenor, 62 per cent of people state that they regularly check mobile costs when they are abroad. At the same time, Norwegians are also keen holiday internet browsers. From July 2013 to July 2014, Telenor recorded a 113 per cent increase in total mobile data use abroad.

'Most people want to take their surfing habits abroad, but a few people turn off their mobile data because they're worried about costs being too high. Telenor is now bringing in more affordable, automatic data packs in all countries so that customers are given control and there are no unpleasant surprises when they check their mobile bills after their holidays,' says Bjørn Ivar Moen, Head of Telenor Norway's Mobile division.

Moen emphasises that if you use a little data, all you pay for is the actual use - less than the maximum price per day.

'And naturally you pay nothing at all for the days you don't use data. With this service, you can surf securely with a maximum day rate no matter where in the world you are. Telenor is providing secure daily internet browsing around the globe,' says Moen.

Maximum price
Telenor's new surf packs do not have to be ordered or activated as all customers will automatically receive them.

'The USA has now become a member of the EU in as much as Telenor is introducing the same pricing for browsing in the USA and the EU, which is unique for Telenor customers. The 50 MB day packs will cost just NOK 29 whether you are in the USA, EU or Switzerland. The customer will not be charged more than NOK 29 per day unless they personally choose to order additional packs,' says Moen.

Telenor is concerned that the current MB prices can be a risky process for customers travelling abroad. 'This is why we have moved away from them. With a global maximum price, Telenor is delivering the peace of mind customers are asking for. In addition, data use will become far more affordable. In the EU and USA, the price will be just NOK 0.59 per MB if the customer makes use of their entire data pack,' says Bjørn Ivar Moen.

'Telenor has been working for years to make mobile use abroad more affordable and predictable for customers. Now we're taking a big step towards this by giving our customers the freedom to use their mobile as they want without it costing too much. Furthermore, Telenor has 4G agreements in place with 43 countries so that Norwegians can receive the same speeds they do at home in more places than ever before,' says Moen.

Business customers get fixed day rates worldwide
Business customers will also be receiving fixed day rates across the world, and these data packs will also be bigger and more affordable.

'We've made it easy and predictable for business customers. Now they no longer have to worry about browsing abroad. We are expanding the data packs to support higher levels of data consumptions, while also bringing many of our prices down. Customers who are about to use up their day pack will receive an SMS notification from us,' says Marina Lønning, Business Market Manager at Telenor Norway.

Day packs will also automatically be made available to all Telenor business customers.

'Business customers want to have control of their costs, and they want notification when the pack has been used up, as well as bigger data packs,' says Lønning.

Lønning cites how beneficial Telenor's service is in countries that the majority of business travellers visit. 'In the EU we now have the best service on the market, and our new USA service is unique to the market,' says Lønning.

Marina Lønning and Bjørn Ivar Moen conclude in perfect harmony: 'As a Telenor customer, there's no need to turn off your data roaming this summer,' they say.

Telenor has begun the enormous task of moving all its customers to the new solutions, and all customers will be covered by the new scheme before 10 June.

Customers can find a full overview of their usage in the Mitt Telenor app.
