Biggest 4G provider with 5000 base stations

(Fornebu, 12 December 2016) Telenor now offers 4G through 5000 mobile base stations and is by far the biggest 4G provider. Significant ongoing development will strengthen this position. Telenor is currently building 4G masts in 15 new locations per day.

Given its record pace, Telenor is well ahead of its goal to have 4G in place at the remainder of its 7300 mobile base stations.

4G stations no. 5000 is a brand new mast in Tuddal valley in the municipality of Hjartdal in Telemark. This baste station is one of 23 that Telenor has entered into collaborative agreements with municipalities this year to work on. These agreements mean that municipalities and Telenor share the bill for projects that Telenor would not otherwise consider profitable.

Proactive in rural areas

It was Mayor Bengt Halvard Odden in the municipality of Hjartdal who had the honour of cutting the ribbon on the new base station.

‘This new mobile base station in Tuddal allows us to provide good coverage and capacity for permanent residents, holiday visitors and others who are passing through. Good mobile coverage is about being able to keep up with the times and be just as proactive out here in rural Telemark as they are in more urban parts of the region,’ says Odden.

Fastest 4G network

‘It’s particularly gratifying to note the joy of local populations when new areas receive mobile coverage, and it motivates me when I start new discussions with councillors and mayors in municipalities across Norway,’ says Bjørn Amundsen, Director of Coverage.

Recent independent testing has shown that Telenor has the fastest 4G network in Norway.

‘There’s a significant value in being in this position - not just for us but for our customers. And we will ensure that remain the biggest and fastest provider of 4G going forwards. This rapid expansion means that we are running at around 100 new 4G base stations every week in the approach to Christmas. This is strong and we know that for many people 4G for Christmas is likely to be the most welcome of gifts,’ says Amundsen.
